30 Pictures Of Budapest That Will Make You Want To Visit This Beautiful City

Budapest, the vibrant historic capital city of Hungary, has fast become one of the hottest travel destinations in Central Europe. With its unique fusion of historic eras — rich in Jewish history, royal Habsburg rule, the dark times of World War II and Communism — the city’s beauty is only enhanced by the way its architecture blends each of these time periods into a photographic wonderland.

Having visited this picture-perfect city, I can attest that the combination of historic buildings, incredible views, vibrant city streets bustling with people, and lush green spaces brought out the shutterbug in me big time. If they say a picture is worth a 1,000 words, then I will just share with you a few — OK, 30 — of my favorite pictures of Budapest and let them speak for themselves. Perhaps these snapshots of Budapest will inspire you to visit this gorgeous city on your next vacation, as well as provide you with a few places and ideas of what to snap for your own Instagram pics.

Beautiful Views of the Pest side of the City

This picture was taken from the top of Gellert Hill and shows the Elizabeth Bridge that connects the Buda side with the Pest side of the city.

Some of the most iconic photographs taken in Budapest are the vistas of the Parliament Building from Fisherman’s Bastion on Castle Hill.

Historic and Famous Budapest Buildings and Landmarks

One of the most photographed buildings in Budapest is the Parliament Building. which was inspired by the architecture of London’s Parliament Building. This building can be photographed from many vantage points, each providing another spectacular view from the last.

This shot was taken from a boat on the Danube river. I don’t have a picture of the Parliament Building at night, but as the sun goes down, the building is illuminated and it absolutely breathtaking.

The Basilica of St. Stephen with its domed roof is a photographer’s favorite. The pedestrian street leading up to its entrance provides a safe place to capture your shot.

The roof tiles of Matthias Church on Castle Hill are a beautiful mosaic masterpiece. This church has so many unique features to photograph.

The Ethnography Museum is located across the street from the Parliament Building. It is a massive elegant building that just begs to be photographed.

Located on a posh tree-lined street, the Terror House is a beautiful baroque building with great architecture. This happens to be one of Budapest’s most infamous buildings and worth a trip inside. Read more: A Peek Inside The Terror Museum.

Another Instagram favorite location in Budapest is Fisherman’s Bastion. The fairy tail spires and the winding ramparts make a magical backdrop for perfect selfies. The views of the city from this location will take your breath away.

The Great Market Hall is one of Europe’s best preserved historic buildings and was one of my favorite locations to photograph.
Not only will you capture some amazing pictures, but you can also grab lunch or pick up a few traditional Budapest delicacies at the same time.

The beautiful interior the historic Cafe Gerbeaud is drop dead gorgeous! This must-visit cafe serves up the best pastries in Budapest.

The Szechenyi Chain Bridge is one of Budapest’s top landmark attractions. If you want to photograph this magnificent bridge without the many crowds come early.

Budapest at Night

When the sun goes down, the beauty of the city takes on a new light. The Elizabeth Bridge illuminated at dusk.

The pedestrian friendly Vaci Uta comes alive at night with people dining, shopping, and just taking in an evening stroll.

At night, Castle Hill is lit up and becomes a magical glowing romantic sight.

Jewish Historical Sites

The Dohany Synagogue in Budapest is the largest synagogue in Europe. Its unique Moorish architecture, complete with onion domes, will inspire plenty of great photographs.

If the outside of the Dohany Synagogue did not wow you, stepping inside this 3,000 seat historic synagogue will leave you speechless.

Located on the grounds of the Dohany Synagogue is the Jewish Cemetery, where I captured the haunting beauty of this historic site.

One of Budapest’s most moving memorials, the “Shoes on the Danube”, is a chilling reminder of the horrors that took place during the Nazi occupation. The memorial, featuring bronze shoes, is located on the banks of the Danube between the Chain Bridge and the Parliament building.

Fun and Unique Things To See

For a bird’s eye view of the city, take a ride on the Budapest Eye.

The city has fun places to relax, as well as provide a few unique and colorful photo ops.

Located in Erzsebet Square near the Budapest Eye, is where you can lock your love for the city on specially designed “Love Lock” sculptures.

Budapest’s Jewish Quarter is home to some great street art.

When you venture of the beaten path, you are rewarded with finding incredible art murals.

Iconic Transportation

The yellow #2 Tram is one of Europe’s most photographed trams. This popular tram follows a route that will take you along the banks of the Danube River.

Budapest’s Castle Hill Funicular, built in 1870, is a quick and easy way to get to the top of Castle Hill.

Uniquely Budapest

On the grounds of the Parliament Building, you will find this metal wall with the date 1956 inscribed. This marks the spot where the 1956 Hungarian Uprising took place. This wall is the entrance to the underground museum that retells this tragic event.

The Imre Nagy Statue features one of Budapest’s important historic figures standing in the center of a small footbridge. Formerly located in the Vertanuk tere square, this famous statue is being moved to its new location at Jaszai Mari ter by mid 2019.

The Liberty Statute or Freedom Statue, located on the top of Gellert Hill, is one of Budapest’s largest statutes and one of its most photographed monuments.

These pictures are only a small sampling of the many beautiful things and places that you can photograph while in Budapest. A few places that are popular for photographs that weren’t included are the city’s thermal baths and the funky urban Ruin Bars. A quick Instagram search for these places will provide you with additional ideas for your photo inspiration.

We are dying to go to Budapest. Hungary keeps coming up on our bucket list items, and we have friends that love it there. Your pictures certainly convince me. I love the street art. I’d love to see/experience the public baths too and of course, the architecture is stunning.

  Thank you. I spent 4 fast-paced days there and wished that I had more time. The city is filled with so many great things that I didn’t get to see, but will the next time I return (the Church in the Cave, the Children’s Railroad, Monument Park and of course all the restaurants one cannot possibly eat at). It is a clean, beautiful city filled with kind people. I do hope you will have an opportunity to see it soon.
